It is fortunate that Yahoo now offers users the ability to have an unlimited number of secondary email addresses which can be used for specific purposes. If one or more of these gets discovered by phishers or scammers you can close that address down & substitute another.
When I list on eBay I use a direct payment link on the listing which allows a buyer to pay direct to my account with that particular payment portal (one of the few allowed on the UK site). But without going in to specifics it's not difficult to obtain the email address used for that portal whether its PayPal or another. I changed the email address used for this particularl portal some months ago to a secondary Yahoo address used exclusively for that portal & nothing else. Now in the last few days I've started to be deluged with emails from Chinese wholsealers which are headed "eBay question from member xxxxxxx" but don't come through eBay's site but come direct to my secondary Yahoo address. Clearly they are using some software to extract addresses used for payment portals and no doubt the phishers and other criminals won't be far behind.
So I will be closing that address shortly & setting up a new one and will consider doing a secondary address for PayPal too, though I don't have a direct payment link on listings for them (as I'd like people to use my preferred alternative). |
